Quick answer

When critical equipment breaks down, the deadline is the point where lost work costs more than the fix. Smaller unsecured amounts can sometimes be funded the same day for established businesses, and property-secured funding of $20k to $250k is possible the same day where the security is simple. Get a written quote, check insurance and warranty first, and fund the repair or replacement that gets you working soonest.

Key points

  • Work out what a day of downtime costs you — that sets the real deadline.
  • Check warranty, insurance and any service agreement before paying for anything.
  • Compare repair against replacement on downtime, not just price.
  • A written quote with a lead time is the most useful document to bring to the call.

The excavator throws a hydraulic line on day two of a ten-day job. The commercial oven dies on a Friday morning before a booked-out weekend. The refrigeration unit in the truck fails halfway to a delivery. In each case, the deadline isn’t on a calendar — it’s the moment the lost work starts costing more than the fix.

This page is about funding the repair or replacement quickly enough to keep that moment from arriving.

What’s your real deadline?

Work out what a day of downtime costs. It’s usually more than people think:

  • Lost revenue — jobs, covers, deliveries or billable hours that can’t happen
  • Idle wages — staff on the clock with nothing to work with
  • Penalties — liquidated damages, late-delivery clauses or lost customers
  • Hire costs — renting a replacement while yours is fixed
  • Spoilage — stock or materials that won’t keep

If a day of downtime costs $4k and the repair is $18k, every day you wait for funding is expensive. That’s your deadline.

Repair or replace?

Don’t decide on price alone. Compare on downtime and total cost:

QuestionRepairReplace
How soon can it be working?Depends on parts availabilityDepends on stock and delivery
What’s the total cost?Parts, labour, call-outPurchase, delivery, installation, minus any trade-in
How reliable afterwards?Depends on the machine’s age and historyNew warranty
Could you hire in the meantime?OftenOften

A repair that’s half the price but waits three weeks for parts may cost more overall than a replacement that’s here tomorrow. If the machine has failed several times, replacement usually wins.

Check these before you pay for anything

  1. Warranty. Recently bought or serviced equipment may still be covered.
  2. Insurance. Some policies include machinery breakdown; many don’t. business.gov.au suggests reading your product disclosure statement and contacting your insurer promptly. See insurance excess if a claim is involved.
  3. Service agreements with the supplier or a maintenance contractor.
  4. Finance or lease terms, if the equipment is already financed — some leases cover repairs or require the lessor’s involvement.

What’s realistic by timeline?

  • Today: same-day funding is possible for smaller unsecured amounts; $20k – $250k is possible the same day with simple property security.
  • This week: unsecured cash-flow loans for trading businesses, typically $5k – $500k, or larger secured amounts up to $5m possible within 24–48 hours.
  • Planned replacement: if you can limp along with hire equipment, there’s time to compare equipment finance against a business loan.

What to have ready when you call

  • The written quote — repair or replacement — with lead time and supplier details
  • Your downtime cost, even a rough daily figure
  • Insurance or warranty status — claim lodged, not covered, or unknown
  • Business bank statements and ABN or ACN
  • Verified payee details if funds should go straight to the repairer or supplier — see paying the bill directly
  • Property details, if you’d consider security for a larger replacement

Can the money go straight to the supplier?

Often, and it’s usually the fastest route. Paying the repairer or equipment supplier directly removes one transfer and gives them confidence to release parts or deliver. Confirm their bank details by phone using a number you already have — breakdowns are exactly the kind of urgent moment payment scammers look for.

What about tax on a replacement?

If you replace equipment, the purchase may be eligible for the instant asset write-off if it costs less than $20,000 and your aggregated turnover is under $10 million. The ATO made the $20,000 threshold permanent from 1 July 2026. Your accountant can confirm how it applies — but don’t let tax timing delay getting back to work.

An illustrative breakdown

Illustrative example only. A commercial bakery’s main deck oven fails on a Thursday morning. The repairer quotes $9k but parts are two weeks away; a replacement oven is $26k and can be installed on Saturday. Lost wholesale orders cost the bakery about $3k a day. Two weeks of downtime would cost more than the replacement.

The owner sends the replacement quote with three months of bank statements before 10am. Unsecured funding is approved that afternoon and paid directly to the supplier on Friday, and the oven is installed on Saturday.

Should you hire while you wait?

Often, yes — especially if the replacement or the parts are more than a few days away. Hiring a machine, a vehicle or a cool room for a week can keep revenue flowing while the permanent fix is sorted, and it takes the pressure off rushing a purchase decision. Add the hire cost to your comparison: a slightly more expensive replacement that arrives sooner can still come out ahead once a week or two of hire is counted. If you hire, put the return date in your calendar and line up funding for the permanent fix before the hire runs out.

Get back to work

When equipment breaks, every hour counts. Ringing the Deadline Desk carries no credit check, and your details aren’t passed around a list of lenders — one team looks at your quote and a real person calls you back.

Please be accurate on the enquiry form: the quote amount, the supplier’s lead time and whether insurance is involved. Accurate details mean we can match you to funding that lands before the downtime bites. Or ring 1300 752 188.

  3. 3

    Same day

Ring or enquire with the quote, the lead time and how the business is trading.

  4. 4

    As soon as funded

Pay the supplier or repairer — directly where possible — and get back to work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business loan to repair equipment?

Yes. Repairing or replacing equipment is a common business purpose for fast funding. A written quote and your recent bank statements are the key documents.

Should I repair or replace broken equipment?

Compare total downtime and total cost. A cheaper repair that takes three weeks for parts can cost more than a replacement available tomorrow. If the machine has failed repeatedly, replacement often makes more sense.

Does insurance cover breakdowns?

Some policies include machinery breakdown cover; many don't. Check your product disclosure statement and contact your insurer promptly. Even if you're covered, you may need to fund the excess or the gap until the claim pays.

How quickly can equipment funding happen?

Same-day funding is possible for smaller unsecured amounts, and $20k to $250k is possible the same day with property security. Larger replacements may take 24 to 48 hours.
